About Dot Kowal

Dot Kowal MA, LMFT

I bring three perspectives to my work with students and families—shaped by years as an independent school administrator, a psychotherapist, and a college counselor.

Each perspective brings something essential:

  • As an administrator, I know how schools actually work—the culture, the systems, and the behind-the-scenes dynamics that shape a student’s experience.
  • As a psychotherapist, I can spot the emotional undercurrents that often swirl during the college process, and I help families move through them with steadiness and compassion.
  • As a college counselor, I’ve guided hundreds of students through applications, essays, and decisions—helping them uncover their authentic voice while building thoughtful strategies.

Woven together, these perspectives give me a wide-angle view and a steady hand. I see the institutional landscape, the emotional terrain, and the admissions roadmap—all at once. My goal is simple: to help students feel both grounded and empowered as they step into this next chapter of their lives.

Who I am:

Since 2010, I’ve worked in Bay Area independent schools in academic, personal, and college counseling. I’ve served as Director of College Counseling at Woodside Priory School and Sonoma Academy, and as Head of Upper School at Crystal Springs Uplands School. My therapeutic background as a licensed psychotherapist (MFT) allows me to bring a values-based, wellness-centered, and growth-oriented approach to my work.

I hold a B.A. in English from Williams College, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University, and a certification in School Management and Leadership from Harvard Business School and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Who I work with:

I work with students and their families navigating the educational landscape through high school and beyond. Families who want more than just college-acceptance—who want this process to be a journey of self-discovery and growth—are a good match for me. Typically, this work begins in 8th–10th grade and continues through 12th grade and college. It requires a shared commitment to growth, responsibility, openness, and authenticity.
